There is a big difference between Historic Renovation versus Historic Restoration. A restoration loosely defined means bringing the building back to its original design as much as possible. This typically means using single pane replacement glass, possible re-building of the sashes, or replacement of the entire sash.
This is the purist approach to any Historical Building. Monies are available through the Colorado Historical Society as well as other states with Historical Societies. A private owner can receive 25% of the total window package, whereas a 501(C)3 can receive 50% of the window package. A grant such as this will require an Engineering Assessment just to apply for the Grant. This grant is usually a 50/50 split of a $10k fee with the property owner and the Society. This assessment in no way guarantees your acceptance for the grant however.

One of the finest examples of our restoration glass work can be found on the corner of Main and Commercial streets in downtown Trinidad Colorado. The building was designed by Rapp Brother Architects and completed in 1901. By using archived photos, we were able to duplicate the window configurations and are currently designing new storefronts to match the original architecture. The new owner states that while the historical monies were attractive, the constraints were too constrictive. They chose to fund the project themselves utilizing state-of-the-art windows and realize a 40% energy savings as well as state and federal tax credits.
One major consideration, especially for an owner occupied property or a for-profit business such as a hotel, is energy usage. With any of today’s windows, window replacement using double glazed windows, will result in a 30-35% energy savings at least.
An Energy Assessment should be performed to provide a more accurate idea as to the expected energy savings. Keller Glass can recommend those companies that perform an Energy Assessment to provide a more accurate idea of energy savings. |
